Waco Texas (What a GREAT Trip)

February 28, 2007

As most everyone knows I went to Waco Texas (D&G) Feb 23rd 24th and 25th! On the way down I rode with Jammie Tinker and her Mother Katrina! Joyce Heminover and he daughte followed us down there.Once we got into Waco (after one other turn around) WE GOT LOST – It was so funny Poor Jammie – We were giving her directions and she was going in circles… We ended up turning around ON A HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL Field (NO We were not ALLOWED to – we sorta kinda snuck in and used it.) There was no other way out! lol TOO FUNNY! And Poor Joyce was following us hahaha!

Once we got there we had a blast I met a few girls from Barrel Horse World (They were GREAT!) Kyle got there Friday night (I was sooo glad to see him)

I high lope Friday and Mordis and I were in the 2-D we had a GREAT lope! We had GREAT barrels and he worked liked a pro! Saturday my ankle was a little sore and I held him up a little and we were in the 2-D again, but sunday we were making and run and my broke leg touched the 2nd barrel (panic set in) and I pulled him out away from the barrel and we were in the 3-D. I was very proud of him he worked all three days like a sesaoned rodeo horse lol… He took GREAT care of ME!

Kyle and I ate at Hooters, Olive Garden, El Chicos, and a BBQ Place… I love food – Food is one of my favorite things about traveling!!!! The water in Waco was a little dirty tasting and some of the resturants we ate at the soft drinks water was not filtered and you could taste the water in the drink (eww!) But, the food was great and the people were friendly! I enjoyed seeing part of Baylor what a nice school! Waco had a great facility and the people who work and run the D&Gs are just GREAT and I loved the announcer he was great I loved him and he was so positive I REALLY ENJOYED HIM!!!!!!!! I wish he did more barrel races I went to!

Cole was there and Did the live broadcast for BarrelHorseWorld I got to meet him and he was sooooo funny and very nice. I was excited that people got to do live interviews. I had to saddle so I missed that part BUMMER! I was stoked that I was going to get to be on camera!

Mordis came home and pulled up great! He is happy and glad to be home! We turned him out Monday and Today he was really enjoying him self. He needs new shoes from the kicking he did at Waco (SILLY MONSTER!)

Well, I am headed to the barn to play with our new Electro Grooms! YAY!

My Life this week!

February 22, 2007

Well, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week were amazing! I rode today and bathed my horses! I am very excited about going to Waco This weekend. Mordis and I are preparing and packing! YAY!

My mother had Selmonella Poisioning but she went to the Doctor this AM and got a shot (which helped her with in minutes!). She is much better tonight and she goes back to the Doctor in the AM. For a check up!

My father schooled horses today and 3 of them ran amazing one of them won by several lengths and had the fastest training race of the day! But, we did have one who had a bad stumble and was kocked down after stumbling. I wasnt to THANK THE LORD for watching over My Daddied horse and our JOckey! The horse he is okay. He cut his foot pretty badly, and will need 6 to 9 months to heal. But, God was watching over Him and Gary!

Mordis was a BEAR to ride today! lol He is feeling really really good. His ulcer is healed up! People were here looking at Prospects on Monday and I was in the house on the phone.. I came out of the house to see DAD leading MORDIS around for these people to see. I was about to DIE. lol He was showing off Mr Mordis to them and telling them about his Futurity win! hahaha! Too funny!!!!

Waco is very exciting for me, but I must say I am a little unsure. I am back to riding and I have made a few high lopes at home on Mordis. I took Mordis to one Jackpot where we did very well! But my leg was very sore for 3 days after that! I am going to Lope threw and just make pretty patterns!
And I am excited about Waco because I am getting to go down there with my friend! WOO HOO! And we are meeting up with some friends and KYLE! That is the best part of Barrel Racing! The great people who I get to see and be around! I am truly blessed to have so many amazing people in my life!!!

Well I just wanted to update on my everyday Life! Hope all is well !!!

Not every BIT is for EVERY PERSON!

February 20, 2007

One of the neatest things I have learned lately is that certain people are comfortable with certain bits. Even though some horses are trained in a certain bit, they may need a different bit when beng ridden by a different person. Some people PULL UP, some OUT, some Straight Back, Some Up and then OUT, Some pull over, and some don’t pull at all =0) But, some bits work better for certain riding styles. Some bits work best for people who pull straight up because that is the directions that bits actions works best… I love O Rings!!!!!! I THINK THIS IS A NEAT LESSON…. FIND A BIT THAT WORKS FOR YOU AND YOUR HORSE!

There is more than one way to train a barrel horse!

February 17, 2007

I showed Jumpers/Dressage Horses for many years. Started lessons when I was 6 years old. But, I would come home and not have a lot to do in my off time. I got a GREAT Idea – I was going t buy prospects off the track ride THEM and sell READY TO PATTERN BARREL FUTURITY PROSPECTS!!!
When I decided I wanted to do this I was about 13. After two years of selling Futurity Prospects, I decided I wanted to train Barrel Horses!!! I wanted to learn everything in one day, lol!!! I was 15 years old and all I wanted to do was Train a Barrel Horse!!! I’d had TWO Finished Horses I Junior Rodeoed on, and had no credintals at all. But, I was going to be a FAMOUS Trainer (LoL) Luckily I had a GREAT father who slowed me down, and gave me a little reality check. He thought my DREAM WAS A GREAT ONE, something I could successfully accomplish. But, he said I needed to put tools in my tool box before I started to build a house (lol)… HAHAHA! (My father is the king of analogies).
He bought me every book and video on the market. I watched video after video, read book after book… Hmm… I wasn’t getting anywhere, so I started making deals with people when they bought horses from us. You buy the horse you give me a lesson! (HAHAHA!) And Dad hauled me to ride with any Professional Barrel Racer who had time and would let me. I also went to clinics and had help from my friends who barrel race.
I learned so much that year!!! I probabley rode with 12 different people!!! The problem was that none of them did it the same way!!! Some of them had similar styles, and did similar things… But, no two of them trained a like and no two of them rode a like. I started to get confused.
I remember sitting down and asking my father what he though, and he just smiled and laughed. He told me that when he was younger he had worked for some of the greatest race horse trainers in the world, none of them did it the same way! He told me what he had to do was take what he liked from each persons program, and bridge those pieces together!!! He told me “You Have to Make Your Own Program!”. So, that is what I set out to do. “Make MY OWN Program”.
Finally 3 years after my original DREAM to train Barrel Horses, my father thought I was ready to start! I remember when he said he was going to help me get a horse to train! I was so excited as I started to day dream about what an amazing horse he was going to get to ride and how well it would be bred… My DAY came, as my father unloaded my FIRST “Trainee” the day dream I had came to a scretching HOLT (haha)! Dad unloaded a 10 year old kid broke Two Eyed Jack bred Palomino Gelding… WHAT!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!! Well, I learned more from ol’ Pokey than any other horse. I had to RE BREAK HIM, he knew neck rein and stop. THAT WAS IT! Gezz, after a month or two I had ol’ Pokey ready for Level 2 Dressage (hahaha) And then I finally got to start him on Barrels. I WAS A BARREL HORSE TRAINER. hahahaha I sold Pokey 6 months later to a 7 year old Girl to be her PLAY DAY HORSE. He got the best home. Dad then let me have the profit and he went back to go to the Local Auction and bought Two More. I did the same thing! I brought them home, got them looking good. Got them “Dressage Horse” BROKE, then I started the Trench Digging. And took them back to Auction. I took $600 geldings and turned them into $2,500 GREAT BROKE Started ON Barrel Gelding =). That was great for a BROKE High School Kid!
I went threw LOTS of those old geldings. And what I love the most about them was I learned about getting a horse really broke, the maintence that is over looked by so many people, I didn’t just have to take care of these geldings, I had to bring them back from death warmed over. I had to learn about shoeing routine for each horse, and the correct angle for each horse. I had to learn about a worming routine, training charts for each horse, and LEG work. Because some of these guys weren’t the soundest things in the world. They were old geldings, with good hearts and my father made me take care of them like $100,000 Race Horses. If I ran them I had to do thier legs up and the day before I went to a barrel race I had to pack their feet and get them “Race Ready”… lol
5 years and 20 old broke geldings later, I finally get to ride COLTS out of My Fathers Race Barn (hahaha! Very Exciting) and I have now TRAINED a Multiple Futurity Money Earners and a FUTURITY Champion!
I have taken what I know from Dressage and Jumping and applied it to what I have learned from each Barrel Horse Trainer, and hwen you mix in the leg work I know from race horses you have my very Unique training style and my very Unique riding style. I did take what I knew from English and what liked from each person Program to form my own, but the hardest part was bridging those pieces together. But, lots of riding everyday and lots of different horses have helped me so much with that part of it!
I have learned you have to listen to each horse. I rely on my FEEL for each horse indavidual horse to help me make the proper training choices for that horse. Even though I have “My Style” so does each horse. So, sometimes it is very important that I have learned from so many people, I can take things I’ve learned that I don’t use a lot and apply them to certain horses who may fit that style. It’s very important to help each horse develop their own style. I think it is very important to listen to each horse, and your feel for that horse. Allow your self to mold to that horse and allow that horse to mold to you.
There is more than one way to train a Barrel Horse… And Their is More Than ONE way to RIDE a Barrel Horse… You just have to listen to your horse and to your heart and make the RIGHT Choices for the BOTH of you. And sometimes certain people don’t fit certain horses… And that’s okay. Doesn’t make them a bad rider or that horse a BAD horse… There is just more than one way to do the same thing!!!!!!! =0)

Being Happy Comes First!

February 10, 2007

Anyone who trains horses knows that the Horses Come First in everything you do. But, I have learned lately being a POSITVE Christian should come 1st!!! Not saying that they can’t go hand in hand.. But, sometimes we get so lost in everyday life and the stress of REAL WORLD obligations we lose sight of who we are and what we stand for! But one day a week not always SUNDAY I take a break from the work and concentrate on family friends and my life with Kyle. The horses enjoy a break from work and so do we. On those days I take my horses and just Turn them out in the middle of the Race Track they have a BLAST. I just relax and when Kyle is here we go to dinner, a movie, and enjoy each other. I think it is very important to have a life and enjoy who you are and who you are with. I am starting to learn that you can’t keep NEGATIVE people out of your life but you can choose how you react to those people. It does make it much easier to surround yourself bu positive people, people you can call on your worst days!!! I have bad days, days I am not proud of… I just need to vent, and be upset… Everyone has those days, and for me I have amazing friends who I can confide in. Who I can tell them about my problem they will stop me and make me see the positive and help me get past it… These are the people I THANK THE LORD for putting in my life… I lovepoitive people and everyday I seem to find more positive people. When you are positive and you make it a point to be positive most negative people avoid you so you will find more often than not you will meet more positive people… Your life is your actions and your reactions to others actions… Chose to act postive and react postive!!!!!!

Praying to the Man with the Reasons Why

February 6, 2007

When I was riding today I felt very Blessed. I took a minute to Thank God for giving me everything he had and for helping me with Mordis. As I looked to the Sky I could feel the sun on my face and the wind blowing in my ear. I knew he was there. God is amazing and he does amazing things!

I am not riding 100% but I am doing really good. I am very proud of Mordis he is taking Great care of me! Weloped threw the Barrels here at home today. Yesterday and today we worked on Counter Arching, Crossing Over, Side Passing… He is doing great and riding Great! I am very proud of him and can’t wait to get to anothe Barrel Race. I need to make a few runs on him to gain confidence in my Leg.

I have never been so motivated in my whole life. I am more mentally ready than ever. I am actually riding better than I ever have mentally. Calm Collected and really good timing. I am riding with my upper leg more and really making quick smart choices in my training. I am very excited to get my leg back 100% (This is MIND over Matter though) So I amstaying strong and getting better. I will be 100% by the Silver Cup… (Pray for me PLEASE!)

February 3, 2007

Hey Everyone!!! This week has been very exciting I have been at Robin Masons riding. We’ve been hauling colts and our good horses… Mordis is doing amazing! He is tuned up and ready to go… but, there really isn’t anywhere to go that isn’t a little trap pen… Mordis is KILLER in those little traps but I am not real big on weekly Jackpots… Poppy Phillips Milhouse is coming over from california this month. I am estatic she does holistic thearpy and I just love her attitude and her kind heart, I just can’t say enough good things! She has done amazing THINGS for ME and MY HORSES!!! Today Katie and I saddled “Pete” (Timely Filed) I am so ready to be 100% so I can start riding him he reminds me so much of Streakin La Higher! He has a HUGE personality and he thinks people are the GREATEST!!!!!!! Dad and I have decided to run Hawk (Chicos Dashin) at Remington, With the purses the way they are in Oklahoma I would be silly to not try him and see if he can break his maiden! I actually wanted to run Pete, he is really athletic and has a GIANT Stride… But, I don’t think he would be ready by Remington…. I am getting ready to finish my barn and we are fixing my arena… I have a really nice arena it is huge. Dad built it for me when I was 16. It is 300 x 350. HUGE! We have added a center all on both ends and side gates also…. But, I actually have my barrels set up in the field next to my arena (lol). Robin and I are going to haul in a little SAND to mix in with my Red Clay Dirt… Well, I hate to do this but I have to….. BRAG TIME lol hehehehe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CARY MERRITT AND JH MATHEW WON THE 2-D WOO HOOO Cary came up and rode with me and she is just an awesome horseman so kind and has all the natural talent in the world so when Igot her e-mail that mathew had won the 2-D I was so thrilled I called My Parents and Kyle right away!!!!!!!!!!! (Don’t forget JH Mathews brother The Last JH is for sale on my For Sale Page!!!)
